‘Open the Door’ is a writing competition with a difference: it is an initiative to document the lives and experiences of Muslim children in the UK through their own writing.Open the Door Sponsors

“As mothers, readers and writers, we believe it is important for our younger brothers and sisters to learn to express themselves through the written word, to feel free to do so, and to have their contributions acknowledged and appreciated by the wider community.” – Na’ima B. Robert, SISTERS Editor and children’s book author.

At a time when young children in the UK face an array of obstacles in the form of poverty, illiteracy, unstable homes and insufficient quality time with parents and carers, we feel it is our duty to provide them with a means of expressing themselves and making their voices hear.

Who can enter?

The competition is open to all children, aged between 7 and 11, at participating schools in the UK. The competition is also open to students at community schools and home schools. The aim of the competition is to give each participant the opportunity to share a slice of their life with adults and children everywhere: to open the door and invite us all to come inside!
